CoreFour Inc.’s Usage Policy for Edsby Services

Date of last revision of this policy: September 28, 2021

Welcome to Edsby! Edsby provides a suite of software services (the “Services”) to teachers, students, parents and administrators of a specific Education Organization. The Services are owned and operated by CoreFour Inc. (the “Company”).

This document contains our Usage Policy governing your access to and use of the Edsby Services. We suggest you read these terms carefully before using the Services.

If you do not accept this Usage Policy, you may not use the Services. If you use our Services you agree to this Usage Policy.

Respecting and protecting the privacy of information stored within the Edsby Service is very important to us. Please consult our Services Privacy Policy at edsby.com/privacy-policy/ for details on how we do that.

1. Overview

Edsby is a cloud-based software service that modernizes how teachers, students and parents engage with each other. Edsby is often selected through a formal competitive procurement process and rigorous evaluation of many factors including privacy and security of student data. Edsby Services are managed by Education Organizations as one part of a suite of technology solutions that every Education Organization requires.

Education Organizations pay to use Edsby and own and manage the information stored and collected by Edsby on their behalf.

User accounts for a specific Education Organization using Edsby are created by or under the direction/invitation of the administrative staff of that Education Organization. Parents/guardians and students are not allowed to create their own accounts on Edsby; they are only allowed to use authorized accounts set up specifically for them at the direction of the Education Organization they are members of.

You are permitted to access a specific customer’s Edsby Services only if you have been directly invited and authorized to do so by the administrative staff within that Education Organization.

2. Changes To This Usage Policy

The Company may make changes to this Usage Policy from time to time. We suggest you check this Usage Policy periodically for changes. By your continuing use of the Services after changes are posted, you will be deemed to have accepted such changes. Previous versions of our Usage Policy, previously described as Terms of Use, are available on our website for review.

3. Scope of Use

You are only authorised to view, use, copy for your records and download small portions of the Content (including without limitation text, graphics, software, audio and video files and photos) from the Services for your informational, non-commercial use, provided that you leave all the copyright notices, including copyright management information or other proprietary notices intact.

You may not store, modify, reproduce, transmit, reverse engineer or distribute a significant portion of Services Content, or the design or layout of Services in any form or media. The systematic retrieval of data from the Services is also prohibited.

You agree not to submit or transmit any content, files, videos, photos, web links or other materials to the Services that: (i) are defamatory, threatening, obscene or harassing, (ii) contain a virus, worm, Trojan horse or any other harmful component, (iii) incorporate copyrighted or other proprietary material of any third party without that party’s permission or (iv) otherwise violate any applicable laws. The Company shall not be subject to any obligations of confidentiality regarding any information or materials that you submit online except as specified in this Usage Policy, or as set forth in any additional terms and conditions relating to specific products or services, or as otherwise specifically agreed or required by law.

4. Copyrights and Trademarks

The materials on these Services, as well as their organisation and layout, are copyrighted and are protected by international copyright laws and treaty provisions. You may access, download and print materials in these Services solely for your personal and non-commercial use. No right, title or interest in any of the materials contained in these Services is transferred to you as a result of accessing, downloading or printing such materials. For your convenience, we may provide links to various other websites that may be of interest to you and for your convenience only. However, the Company does not control or endorse such websites and is not responsible for their content nor is it responsible for the accuracy or reliability of any information, data, opinions, advice, or statements contained within such websites. Please read the terms and conditions of the Usage Policies of any other company or website you may link to from our Services. This Usage Policy applies only to the Company’s Services. If you decide to access any of the third party sites linked from our Services, you do so at your own risk. The Company reserves the right to remove any link at any time. The Company disclaims all warranties, express and implied, as to the accuracy, validity, and legality or otherwise of any materials or information contained on such websites.

6. No Unlawful or Prohibited Use

As a condition of your use of these Services, you warrant to the Company that you will not use the Services for any purpose that is unlawful or prohibited by these terms, conditions, and notices. You may not use the Services in any manner that could damage, disable, overburden, or impair the Services or interfere with any other party’s use and enjoyment of the Services. You may not obtain or attempt to obtain any materials or information through any means not intentionally made available or provided for through the Services.

7. No Commercial Activities

Posting or transmitting advertising or other such promotional materials or forms of solicitations to other users of the Services is prohibited unless authorized by the Company or an administrator at your education organization.

8. User Accounts and Security

You can and should notify your Education Organization of any known or suspected unauthorized use(s) of your account, or any known or suspected breach of security, including loss, theft, or unauthorised disclosure of your password.

You agree you will not access or attempt to access any accounts provided by the Services other than the account(s) assigned to you. If we suspect or detect such inappropriate account access we will inform authorities within your Education Organization.

Any fraudulent, abusive, or otherwise illegal activity may be grounds for the suspension or termination of your account, at the Company’s discretion or by direction of your Education Organization, and you may be reported to appropriate law-enforcement agencies.

9. User Provided Content

Users will be held directly and solely responsible for the content they post on the Services. You acknowledge that you own, are solely responsible or otherwise control all of the rights to the content that you post on the Services; that the content is accurate; that use of the content you supply does not violate this Usage Policy and will not cause injury to any person or entity; and that you will indemnify the Company or its affiliates for all claims resulting from content you supply.

For any content that you post on the Services, all rights, including all intellectual property rights, shall remain the exclusive property of the original owner, and the Company will have a limited, nonexclusive license solely for the purpose of performing its commercial obligations to its Education Organization customer you are a member of, including but not limited to storing, using, translating, and displaying the content.

The license you grant is still in effect even if you stop using the Services. This is required so that for example, content shared by a teacher to other teachers can continue to be provided by Edsby even after that teacher has retired.

The Education Organization through which you are obtaining the Edsby Services has overall control over the disposition of the content you have provided via the Services we operate for it.

The Company reserves the right (but is not obligated) to do any or all of the following:

 • Remove content that is abusive, illegal, or disruptive, or that otherwise fails to conform with this Usage Policy
 • Terminate a user’s access to any or all portions of the Services upon any breach of this Usage Policy
 • Monitor and share with your Education Organization any content in any shared area of the Services

The Company reserves the right to take any action it deems necessary to protect the personal safety of our customers, users, employees or the public. The Company has no liability or responsibility to users of the Services or any other person or entity for performance or non-performance of the aforementioned activities.

Edsby is a cloud-based suite of software services that modernizes how educators, students and parents engage with each other electronically. Edsby Services are owned and operated by CoreFour Inc.

We believe the foundation of any relationship is based on trust and transparency. Our clients entrust us with the Personal Information of students, parents and educators. We take that responsibility seriously. The privacy and security of the people we serve is of utmost importance to us. This Services Privacy Policy (“Policy”) enables you to better understand how Edsby collects, uses, and discloses information through the use of our Services.

1.0 What Does This Policy Apply To?

This Policy applies to the Personal Information we may collect relating to students, parents, and educators (“you” or “your”) through our private browser-based Edsby Services and Edsby applications in the Apple iOS and Google Play stores (“Services”). Please also refer to your Education Organization’s (i.e., your school or school district) privacy policy, which governs the use of your Personal Information.

For privacy practices relating to our public website (edsby.com), as well as those relating to marketing, sales, and support services, please refer to our Edsby Public Website Privacy Policy.

Other Links:

Our Services may contain links to other websites and services that we do not own or operate. By clicking on those links, you will leave our Services. Those third-party websites and services are governed by separate and independent privacy policies, which we recommend you read carefully.

2.0 Definitions

For the purposes of this Policy, the following definitions apply:

“Personal Information” is any information provided to us or generated within Edsby that personally identifies an individual, such as name or email address, or other information which could be reasonably linked to such identifying information.

“Education Organization” refers to various types of organizations that select Edsby as one of their technology solution providers for managing student information. These organizations may include private schools, public school districts, provinces/states, and national ministries of education. Edsby is selected by these Education Organizations, often through a formal competitive procurement process and rigorous evaluation of many factors including privacy and security of student user data. Education Organizations pay to use Edsby. Each Education Organization decides what information should be provided to Edsby, and retains ownership of all the information provided to Edsby as well as control over all the information created in Edsby by users within their organization.

“Parents” refers to the parents, guardians, and others such as aunts, uncles, step-parents, or grandparents that are identified by the Education Organization as someone with the right to have access to information in Edsby regarding a specific child.

3.0 What Personal Information Do We Store?

Each Education Organization determines what information they collect and how it is used. We process a portion of that information in accordance with the specific contractual agreement with that Education Organization. The Education Organization maintains the master repository of this information and controls how your Personal Information is used.

Personal Information Education Organizations provide to us: Education Organizations integrate information about you into our Services. The information that is integrated depends on the Services set out in their specific contract with us. This information may include but is not limited to:

 • Personal Information about students, including but not limited to name, date of birth, gender, grade level, school, student number, Ministry ID, address information, email address, photos for student profiles, certain health information kept in student records, course information, individual education program (IEP), indigenous status, and community service hours.
 • Personal Information about educators and staff, including but not limited to name, salutation, email address, school, staff number, title, and role.
 • Personal Information about parents, including but not limited to name, address, email, relationship to students, and flags about their access rights to information.

Please refer to your Education Organization’s privacy policy to inform yourself how the Education Organization collects your Personal Information.

4.0 What Personal Information Do We Collect?

Personal Information collected by us on behalf of Education Organizations: Edsby may collect Personal Information directly through your interaction on our Services depending on the Services set out in our specific contract with your Education Organization. That Personal Information may include but is not limited to:

 • Information about student progress, such as a student’s attendance status for each school date, a student’s score on an assessment along with comments by the educator, pictures of a student’s work along with observations by the educator, and report card information for each subject a student is taking.
 • User-generated digital content, such as text, images, audio, video, files and web links. This digital content can be placed in messages, profiles, private notes, calendar events, grade books, and postings in the Service. It also includes uploaded files that may have metadata associated with them, which is preserved by the Service and will be available to anyone that can view or download the file.
 • Usage information, such as information about how many students and/or parents at the Education Organization use the Services and how the Services are being used. This information is also collected for security purposes, such as to identify suspicious activity. The information collected may include information such as unique device identifiers, IP addresses, and browser types.

5.0 How Do We Use Your Personal Information?

We process your Personal Information on behalf of and under the instructions of your Education Organization. We use the information in accordance with our agreement with the Education Organization to operate, maintain, and provide various features and functionality of our Services as set out in our specific contract with your Education Organization. The Education Organization determines how the Personal Information is used. Please visit your Education Organization’s privacy policy to see how it uses your Personal Information. We may also use non-identifying and aggregated usage information to improve, develop and optimize our Services and to monitor the security of our Services.

We do not subject users to any advertising and we do not sell any Personal Information. Please see Section 6.0, which describes who we may share your Personal Information with.

6.0 Who Do We Share Your Personal Information With?

We do not sell your Personal Information or the content you provide. There are certain circumstances in which we may disclose, transfer or share your Personal Information with third parties, such as under the following circumstances:

 • Your Education Organization: The information we collect and store about you is accessible to authorized employees of your Education Organization. For example, a school principal may use Edsby to quickly find a Parent’s telephone number to call in the case of an emergency. Your Education Organization controls who has access to information. We also make usage information available to your Education Organization.
 • Third parties at the request of the Education Organization: Education Organizations may request that we share your Personal Information with additional parties that also provide processing services to the Education Organization. We only do this when specifically requested and approved in writing by an authorized senior member of the Education Organization.
 • Microsoft and Google: Our Services can be integrated with Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace for Education if directed to do so by the Education Organization to enhance productivity. For example, when a student writes an essay in Microsoft 365 or Google Docs and submits it to their educator via the Edsby platform, Edsby can make a copy of the selected file and make it available to the educator via the Edsby Services. Also, when Edsby integrates with these systems it provides a way for the End-User to log into Edsby by using Microsoft or Google authentication credentials.
 • Cloud service providers: A carefully selected small number of companies provide essential elements of our cloud-based Service. We limit the information we share with these service providers through contractual, administrative and technical means. For example, we store Personal Information with Microsoft, the provider of our Azure hosting service, and protect it with encryption. Service providers may not use the information disclosed to them for any other purpose other than to provide us with a service.
 • Legal authorities, as required by law: The information we process and store may be disclosed by us to legal authorities if we are required to do so by law. We may also disclose, at our discretion, some information we collect and store where we have reason to believe that disclosing this information is necessary to identify, contact or bring legal action against someone who may be causing interference with the rights, property or rules of the Education Organization using our Services, or someone who may cause or be at risk of imminent bodily harm, or someone who may be violating the Terms of Use of our Services. In such cases, the Education Organization that is managing this instance of our Service will be informed.
 • Business transaction: We may transfer our assets and rights to our Services, including information in our Services, in the event of a merger or sale (including any transfers made as part of an insolvency or bankruptcy proceeding) involving all or part of our business or as part of a corporate reorganization, stock sale or other change in control. In such a case, your Education Organization will be provided with notice and will have the option of opting out of our Services. We will limit the disclosure of Personal Information to only what is necessary and limit the use of the information to the purpose for which the personal information was collected before the transaction and in accordance with applicable laws.

We limit who we share your Personal Information with. We also limit what information we share and how third parties may use, access, process or store such information in the course of performing their duties for us. When we disclose Personal Information, we minimize the disclosure to only what is necessary, in accordance with instructions from our Education Organization customers, and in compliance with appropriate privacy, confidentiality, and security measures.

Should there be a conflict between our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use and our contract with an Education Organization, the terms and obligations set out in our specific contract with your Education Organization will prevail.

We do not have control over the Personal Information that Education Organizations may disclose to third parties. For example, an Education Organization may export certain Personal Information collected in Edsby and make it accessible to others at their discretion.

7.0 How Do We Protect Your Information?

We are committed to protecting the information we store about you. Edsby employs a variety of physical, administrative, and technical safeguards designed to protect Personal Information against loss, misuse and unauthorized access or disclosure. We have taken measures to protect the Personal Information on our Services, which include data encryption, firewalls and access controls for staff and vendors, as well as physical access controls to our facilities. Some other security measures we implement include:

 • Limiting account creation to only those individuals the Education Organization selects. Persons outside the Education Organization cannot create an account.
 • You may only access Edsby within an Education Organization with your user ID and password. Typically these credentials are provided and managed by the Education Organization.
 • The ability for Education Organizations to implement role-based access and usage of an account, which limits what you can do and what information you can see. For example, educators have limited access to students they can view on the Services (e.g. only students in their school) and what they can see on the student profile. Parents can only see the profile of their own children and staff at the school(s) that their children attend.
 • All data sent between the Edsby server and Edsby client (web browser, smartphone app, tablet app) is encrypted.
 • Restricting access to Personal Information to those Edsby staff members who need to know that information for the purpose set out in this Policy and ensuring those staff members are trained in the company’s information protection policies.
 • Adhering to a formal standard for Information Security. CoreFour Inc. is ISO 27001 certified.

8.0 How Long Do We Keep Your Personal Information?

Edsby retains Personal Information on behalf of Education Organizations pursuant to its specific contractual terms with each Education Organization. Our general practice is to not retain Personal Information for any longer than is necessary for educational purposes and legal obligations. Your Education Organization determines how long they retain Personal Information collected via our Services.

9.0 What Are Your Rights?

As a user of our Services, you have rights to access, correct and/or delete your Personal Information in accordance with applicable laws. Some Education Organizations enable you to access and make changes to your Personal Information directly through Edsby’s Services. Where your Education Organization does not enable access and changes to Personal Information, please make your request directly with your Education Organization. We will assist the Education Organization in fulfilling your request in accordance with our obligations.

Our Services can send updates and notifications via email and mobile “push” notifications. You can manage your notifications (including turning them off) via the “Account Settings” facility.

10.0 Children’s Privacy

We comply with our obligations outlined in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”) and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule (“COPPA”), U.S. federal laws designed to protect the privacy rights of children.

We are a service provider to Education Organizations, which disclose Personal Information to us about students and parents either via existing student records or those developed directly on our Services. The information we collect is limited to what we need to fulfill our obligations as outlined in our contracts with Education Organizations. The disclosures are authorized by FERPA. We do not use your Personal Information for any purpose other than to provide our Services to Education Organizations and improve our Services to you.

In accordance with COPPA, we do not knowingly collect information from children under the age of 13 unless and until an Education Organization has provided us with authority for a student under the age of 13 to use our Services. Further, we do not knowingly collect or solicit Personal Information from anyone under the age of 13 in a manner not permitted by COPPA.

If you are a parent or guardian who believes that we have inadvertently collected or stored Personal Information about your child without proper consent, please contact your Education Organization and we will work with them to investigate and delete any such information to the extent required by applicable law.

11.0 Where is your information stored?

We generally store and process your Personal Information in the country in which your Education Organization is located. From time to time, your Personal Information may be accessed by Edsby-authorized services or staff in another country where Edsby or authorized third parties operate. We implement measures to protect your information and to ensure compliance with applicable laws.

Please also refer to your Education Organization’s privacy policy to identify where they process and/or store Personal Information and how they protect it.

12.0 Cookies and Similar Technologies

Our Services use cookies and similar technologies. “Cookies” are small text files installed on your computer hard drive or web browser when you visit or use our website. Most browsers accept cookies by default.

What information do we collect using cookies?

We use first-party cookies, such a session cookie, to help us authenticate you. The session cookie is deleted when the browser session is ended. We may also use third-party cookies to help staff file a customer support ticket with us. Other third-party cookies include firewall cookies for security purposes. Most of the cookies on our Services collect information that is not identifiable to you. To learn more about cookies, visit www.allaboutcookies.org.

How can you manage cookies?

Although most browsers accept cookies, you can set your browser to reject cookies. You will need to follow the instructions contained in your browser’s help file (usually located within the “Help,” “Tools,” or “Edit” settings). If you have more than one browser, the opt-out or settings you set will only apply to that specific browser and not the others. If you choose to disable cookies, some Edsby Services might not function properly.

13.0 Changes To This Privacy Policy

Kids in the graduating class this year at Toronto District Christian High School (“TDChristian”), a private school in the Toronto area, are the first to have used Edsby every year since they started high school.

That means these students are the first to have never known high school without Edsby!

TDChristian was the first school to adopt Edsby when it was first introduced in September 2011. Edsby worked closely with the school to incorporate feedback, and add features and improve the product.

To mark the occasion, Edsby donated an Edsby logo t-shirt to every student in the graduating class, and they were enthusiastically received. Some immediately started asking friends to sign the backs of their t-shirts. A couple said they planned to tie-dye their shirts.

Students Edsby spoke with at TDChristian said they still think Edsby is “so cute”, enjoyed when Edsby “dressed up for different occasions” and thought Edsby’s tweets were “really funny.”

Edsby will miss you, TDChristian grads! Best of luck!

The post Q&A with a little blue robot that was not like other kids appeared first on Edsby.

]]>
The EdTech Show Daily newspaper of the 2015 Florida Educational Technology Conference (FETC), which just concluded, ran an interview with Edsby, the blue alien/robot mascot of the Edsby learning management system for K-12.

I understand you’re from the future?
Yep. My father was something of a notorious chainsmoking metalworking bot and my mother was an Andorian. I was transported back here to bring K-12 learning management into the future.

How are you doing that?
Our software product Edsby is a modern, cloud-based learning management system (LMS) for K-12 school districts that uses latest web and mobile technologies to connect teachers, students and parents in exciting new ways.

Edsby has tightly integrated features like social learning, school news, group collaboration, assessment management, timetables and calendars, course planning, report cards, attendance and more. And they work district-wide, so districts can bring ALL their teachers and students into the future at the same time.

What sets it apart?
Unlike other LMSes, which were developed for higher education or corporate learning, Edsby is designed specifically for K-12 school districts. And to make rollouts quick and to minimize ongoing administration, it integrates tightly with existing school district systems, leveraging data and security policies that already exist. And it allows for deep customization, even while being cloud-based, while similar systems don’t.

You’re working with some famous humans to do this, yes?
Yes. The team at Edsby has been developing educational software for almost 30 years. It’s the original team behind FirstClass, a messaging and collaboration product used by school districts around the world and still widely used in K-12. Their close relationships with education customers over three decades have given them insights into problems faced by teachers, students, parents and administrators. This gave them inspiration to create Edsby—something completely new for schools based on latest software technology.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve faced so far?
Well, they made fun of me a lot at school for looking different.

No, I mean at the company.
Oh. Well, #1 has been tending to our largest customer to date. With almost 300,000 users, one school district in Florida uses Edsby extensively. We’ve optimized and customized the system to perform quickly and reliably for it. Its use of Edsby is staggering. Virtually all 300,000 students, parents and teachers use the system regularly.

Another challenge is that K-12 education is very regional. Even neighboring school districts often have radically different ways of assessing and reporting kids’ academic progress. Systems like Edsby have to be built to connect to a wide variety of regional databases, embrace a wide variety of assessment schemes (e.g. letter grades vs. percentage grades) and report card formats. Luckily, the company was aware of this from day one, and designed its product to take these requirements into account.

Is Edsby a boy or a girl?
Yes. No. Oh, that’s so outdated. What does it matter?!

Edsby is constantly introducing new features and making fixes.

In a server update now available (“build 13116”), Edsby now offers five new features and many fixes.

New features

Progress Reports

Teachers and administrators can now print Progress Reports at the class level by navigating to a Gradebook. Click the gear icon and select View Progress Reports. You can now select your reporting period (all or current).

progress alerts

The Progress Report provides a printable report that includes:

 • A graph of assessment grades
 • A list of Shared and graded assessments
 • A list of any Shared and incomplete assessments tagged with Overdue, Rejected, or Not Done
 • Attendance history

Here’s an example of a Progress Report with all the segments enabled.

progres alert example

Only Incomplete Assessments are included in the report. Only students with incomplete assessments will be included. If you have 4 students with overdue assessments, you will only get 4 reports. No wasted paper.

Importing Assessments and Grades

Teachers that use software like Scantron that captures student grades can import the information into their Gradebook.

The minimum requirements to import assessments and grades are:

 • The software must produce a csv file
 • If the software only produces a list of student names, they must exactly match the names in the gradebook

To import one or more assessments, do the following:

 • Navigate to your Gradebook
 • Click on the Gear icon, and choose Import

Dates are required to import more than one assessment.

 • Click Browse and locate the .csv file or drag and drop the file to the Import form. The information exported by your software is mapped to the fields required by Edsby
 • Select a Unit
 • Click Import

Private Observations

Teachers can now add Private Observations on a student by hovering over the student’s name or photo anywhere in the class and clicking Private Observations. No longer do teachers have to be in a student Perspective view.

private observations

Improved roster printing

Teachers can now fit more students on a single page when printing a class roster.

Mobile client improvement groundwork

The Edsby server now has new functionality that will enable significant updates of the Edsby clients for iOS and Android, scheduled soon.

Helping shape bright minds of the future at a leading private boys’ school

Edsby is the killer app on the network of one of the leading private all boys’ boarding schools in North America.

“Edsby is the most important application at our school for teaching and learning,” acknowledged St. Andrew’s College IT Director Steve Rush.

St. Andrew’s, established in 1899, has a beautiful 110-acre campus on which sits a collection of Georgian-style brick and modern buildings just north of Toronto, Canada. It’s known worldwide for its cutting edge use of information technology. In the 1990s, it installed desktop PCs and labs before most public and private schools. In 2002, it put laptops in the hands of all teachers. All students received laptops the following year. In 2009, the school moved to tablet PCs. Edsby was introduced in late 2012.

St. Andrew’s has long believed that technology has a role to play in helping students and teachers see their daily work, and for parents to be able to see what students are doing on a daily basis.

To facilitate this, the school initially looked at systems such as Net Community from Blackbaud, Desire2Learn, WebCT (later absorbed by Blackboard) and Angel. But none were appropriate. “None of them focused on reporting back what students do by day, what homework they have,” said Rush. So the school developed its own system using FrontPage HTML editor and an online gradebook program.

“We had essentially 100% teacher, student and parent uptake, but unfortunately FrontPage became unsupported, and much of the work was manual and time-consuming, and so we needed a sustainable replacement,” said former St. Andrews IT Integration Committee Chair Jon Butcher.

School IT staff set itself a three to five-year goal to build a parent/student/teacher portal that would provide access to all course, student, and parent related data. Then staff learned about Edsby—which was able to provide much of what the school wanted almost immediately.

“It was impressive to see 80% of our five-year plan implemented in about five months,” said Butcher.

Fern Hill Schools in Ontario, Canada are among the latest educational institutions to adopt Edsby to improve student and parent engagement.

Fern Hill runs a pair of 30-year old prestigious private elementary schools, known for their small class sizes, high quality instruction and inspiring settings, each set on acres of green space.

The schools learned about Edsby on the strength of parents’ recommendations, having seen Edsby used at other private schools. One phone call to Edsby, a quick online demo, and Fern Hill knew Edsby was for them, too.

Staff had an inaugural Edsby training session this week.

Edsby is no longer vulnerable to the recently publicized “Heartbleed” compromise in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library.

The Edsby educational engagement platform uses Apache, which uses OpenSSL for the SSL/TLS encryption it uses to protect user traffic, and upgraded its servers immediately after a fix was made available by the OS service provider.

The vulnerability had been in the wild since OpenSSL release 1.0.1 on March 14, 2012, but had only recently been publicized. OpenSSL 1.0.1g, released this Monday, April 7th, 2014, fixed the OpenSSL bug. Edsby incorporated the fix the next day.

If you’re a kid in a school district or school that uses Edsby, take note: Your mom is vastly more likely to be checking your grades on Edsby than your dad.

Edsby lets parents log in to see their childrens’ school news, academic schedules, attendance records, grades and more.

An analysis of login information on Edsby reveals that 73% of the parents that log in are mothers. Only 14% are fathers. Stepmothers, guardians and grandmothers each register as about 1% of login traffic.

Edsby examined more than 400 million Edsby logins in arriving at the finding.

– Using FirstClass for user authentication “simplifies and improves the use of Edsby,” say FirstClass sites –

Toronto, Ontario; March 18th, 2014 – The Edsby educational engagement platform now offers tight integration for K-12 schools and school districts running the venerable FirstClass email and collaboration system.

Organizations around the world that use FirstClass can now leverage the FirstClass user directory when logging in to the Edsby social learning system. At login time, Edsby can be configured to check FirstClass to see if users exist and whether they are entitled to log in via the open lightweight directory access protocol, or LDAP.

“This new external authentication makes it easy to add Edsby to schools and school districts that run FirstClass,” said John Myers, Co-Founder and CoreFour CEO. “Educators can benefit immediately from Edsby’s parental engagement, teacher timesaving features and other benefits.”

For more than 20 years, companies and school districts have relied on FirstClass for powerful, secure and highly scalable collaboration. FirstClass bridges the chasm between in-person and digital communication, offering innovative, enterprise-grade email, calendars, contacts, instant messaging, document and file storage and more.

“FirstClass has been our core communication tool for 17 years,” said Charles Thacker, Director of Technology at Farmington Municipal Schools in Farmington, New Mexico. “Having FirstClass LDAP integration with Edsby has simplified and improved the use of Edsby for our 11,000 students across all our 18 schools.”

The integration works between Edsby today and versions 10 and higher of FirstClass.
