Edit Weighting

Edit Weighting is accessed from the Gradebook. Edit Weighting is only available to the teachers of a class.

To access the weighting form of a class, navigate to the Gradebook, click the gear icon, and select Edit Weighting from the drop-down menu.

Assessments fall into two broad categories: summative assessments that are used in the calculation of the overall average and formative assessments that are not part of a student’s overall average. When teachers create a summative assessment, they assign weighting points and Edsby uses this information to calculate each student’s overall average.

Edit Weighting displays the assessments and their weighting points in a compact way and enables you to adjust the weighting points without opening multiple assessment forms. When teachers change an assignment’s weighting points on the Edit Weighting form, the assessment form is also updated.

In addition, Edit Weighting enables teachers to group assessments into a bucket and assign a weight to the bucket. The weighting of assessments can be done at any time from the beginning of the term until just prior to a report card. Creating buckets is optional – teachers may find that just adjusting the points on important assessments, or setting like assessments to the same points is all that is required.

Teachers can create buckets based on the assessments type. Existing and future assessments are placed into the bucket. For example, tests and quizzes can be put in the same bucket and given a weight of 30%.

By default, all summative assessments are grouped together in the Everything Else bucket and Everything Else accounts for 70% of the overall average.

Click on the blue triangle to see a list of the assessment type, name, unit, weighting points, and the percentage the assignment contributes to the overall average.

Creating buckets by assessments type

In addition to the weighting points, each assessment has an assessment type and Edsby can use the type to automatically place current and future assessments into buckets of the teacher’s choosing. Once teachers have created buckets, all assessments will be added to the correct bucket and no further work is required.

Creating a bucket

To set weighting based on assessment types, do this:

  • Click Choose what’s in this bucket.

  • Select the assessment type.
  • To add additional assessment types to a bucket, click plus and choose an assessment type.

  • Enter the weighting points. The weighting points you enter are deducted from Everything Else.

  • Select the Aggregate Method for the bucket

As a teacher indicates what assessment types are in the bucket, assessments of that type will automatically move from Everything Else to the bucket.

Removing an assessment type from a bucket

Teachers can remove an assessment type from a bucket by clicking X. Assessments of that type are removed from the bucket and automatically moved to the Everything Else bucket. 

Examples

In this example, a bucket has been created to set the final assessments to 30% of the overall average. The gradebook has 1 final exam and 2 final summative assessments and the remaining 18 assessments remain in Everything Else. The Everything Else weight has been calculated at 70% because the one other bucket is worth 30%.

The weighting in this example is identical, but the teacher has configured the Edit Weighting before any assessments have been added.

The form displays: “This bucket has a weight but no assessments”. As the teacher creates assessments, the finals will be placed in the first bucket and the term work will be placed in Everything Else.

In this example, tests and quizzes are grouped together, as are projects and labs. The third bucket has been created for the final assessments.

The teacher has created a set of buckets that account for 100% of the grade, but 12 assessments exist that don’t match any of the above buckets. The assessments are added to Everything Else and display a warning: “This bucket contains assessments but no weight”.

To resolve this situation, the teacher can change the assessment type, reduce one of the other buckets weight points, or create a bucket for the additional type.

Edit Weighting (KCTA)

Teachers can also set up weighting based on the KCTA grading scheme. Edit Weighting enables them to set up a weighted bucket for each of the categories.

By default, all summative assessments are grouped together in the Everything Else bucket and the percentage of Final Average is 100%. Formative assessments are not used in calculating averages. Creating a KCTA bucket will move every assessment with a KCTA grading scheme into the bucket. Only assessments that do not have a KCTA grading scheme will remain in the Everything Else bucket.

Creating a KCTA bucket

To set weighting based on the KCTA grading scheme:

  1. Click Choose what’s in this bucket.
  2. Select KCTA.
  3. Enter the weighting points for each of the categories.

To create a bucket for the final assessments:

  1. Click Choose what’s in this bucket.
  2. Select the assessment type – Final Exam, for example.
  3. To add additional assessment types to this bucket, click Add to choose an assessment type – Final Summative, for example.
  4. Enter the weighting points for this bucket.

To see the list of assessments with their categories, click the blue triangle. Edit Weighting enables you to adjust the weighting points of individual assignments.

Examples

In this example, the final assessments contribute 30% to the overall average, leaving 70% to be divided between the KCTA categories.

In this example, Edit Weighting was set before any assessments have been created so the form displays: “This bucket has a weight but no assessments”. As the teacher creates assessments with a KCTA grading scheme, they will be added to the KCTA bucket. The bucket with Final Summative and Final Exam assessments will display “This bucket has a weight but no assessments” until assessments with that assessment type are created.

Every assessment including the two finals assessments use the KCTA grading scheme. The final assessments also have an assessment type of Final Exam and Final Summative. The two final assessments can go in either bucket, so teachers need to make a choice.

Click Choose One and select the desired bucket. In this example, the two assessments were added to Final Summative, Final Exam bucket.

The Everything Else bucket contains 32 assessments that do not meet the criteria of any of the buckets. The Everything Else bucket displays a warning: “This bucket contains assessments with no weight”.

To resolve this situation, reduce the weight of an existing bucket. Here, the Knowledge points have been reduced by 3 and those 3 weighting points have been automatically moved to the Everything Else bucket.
